Interesting. I wonder if I'm listening to the same release. Sure the idea of Mark Lanegan venturing into 'electro' (I loathe that word) looks iffy on paper but as he's already proved with Soulsavers its quite possible to pull it off with customary elan.
Whilst this album isn't as immediate as Bubblegum, I think its a better album - taking more time to sink in is usually the mark of an album worth the effort. In my experience, anyway.

Xylophone, horns, deep voice...these guys are great. I've been wanting to see them since I heard them and I already missed them once. I tried calling to order tickets before work today but waited on hold until I was going to be late for work.

First time through and, as a HUGE DTB fan, I was less than impressed. In fact, the song I like the best is the hidden track at the back end of Shelter. That was awesome, cool, funky stuff. The rest of the album, and please don't get me wrong because I did not dislike the album, was very tame. I liked the comment here about Susans framing being pretty much the same every song. In all of DTB's albums, Derek pulls off a unique sound in each song. This album I got bits and pieces of his leads from other songs and his sound was pretty much the same all the way through. I know he can rip it up, I know he can go real fast when he wants too, I know he can "crunchify" and I know he has a great sound without the slide. I did not hear any of that in this album which is very disappointing. Fully get the family aspect here and it keeps them together with the kids. And if putting out music like this is what they want to keep the family life where it is, awesome. I'll take it. When the kids are older and off to school, DTB can be reunited and we can get back what we have lost.
