Helly Hansen: ASK Wool Jacket & Prow Fur:: Review

As the winter months prepare to envelop the Western Hemisphere, winter gear becomes ubiquitous. Standing above the crowd of ubiquity is Helly Hansen and the ASK Wool Jacket, a fine coat that provides warmth and style courtesy of its Scandinavian design. The ASK Wool Jacket is crafted of a polyester and wool blend that repels precipitation to a degree, (i.e. don’t stand in torrential rains) without regards to getting wet. The Ask Wool Jacket is also a warm jacket courtesy of its PrimaLoft One insulation technology that kept this reviewer relatively toasty in recent 30 degree weather. Other features of the ASK Wool Jacket include sealed zippers, a multitude of generous pockets and contemporary flair.

Although the jacket carries a militaristic motif, a negative would have to be the heavy zippers on the sleeve that constantly rub on the wrist. The wool/polyester blend also has a tendency to attract pilling from sweaters or other fabrics it rubs against which can be unsightly if you’re not careful. In other words, be careful what you wear with this jacket and possibly carry a lint brush with you in the car.

Prow Fur

While bracing for winter, one can not be without adequate footwear. This is where the Prow Fur comes in with its combination of a sneaker and a warm winter boot. Think of a Converse Chuck Taylor combined with a snow tire and you’ll get the drift and avoid the cold of the snow or rain. The Prow Fur is a stylish shoe that might be too narrow for some although it fit this reviewer swimmingly. The fit and styling were similar to a vintage Chuck Taylor albeit with a waterproof leather upper. The sole on the shoe felt solid and by that I mean it felt heavy, so if you’re on your feet all day – this may not be the shoe for you. Support appeared adequate and the traction on the bottom of the shoe was strong.
