Aloe Blacc is an American recording artist and songwriter. He began recording during high school as a rapper in the indie hip-hop duo EMANON alongside DJ Exile. He released his first solo album with Stones Throw Records entitled Shine Through in mid 2006, which showcased his diversity with songs ranging from hip-hop, salsa, folk, dancehall, R&B and soul. He credits his love for Latin and Caribbean music to his Panamanian heritage and childhood experiences at family parties where he often heard calypso, salsa, meringue, soca, and reggae music.
The positive reception of Shine Through by the independent music scene garnered him a niche international audience. Blacc spent the next two years writing, recording and touring, and released his sophomore album Good Things in the fall of 2010. Inspired by the sound and style of classic soul artists such as Al Green, Bill Withers, and Curtis Mayfield, Blacc’s second solo effort, Good Things, was primarily retro soul with moments of funk, psychedelic rock, and reggae.
The lead single, “I Need a Dollar” became an international hit after its debut as the theme to HBO TV series, How to Make it in America.” Internet sharing fueled international popularity of the song and it rose rapidly on the radio charts reaching the Top 10 in over ten countries, and was certified platinum in the UK, Germany, and Australia. Good Things was licensed to different countries around the world, where it received gold certification in the UK, France, Germany, and Australia among others.
Throughout 2010-2011, Aloe Blacc successfully headlined several European and North American tours. Along with band, The Grand Scheme, Blacc was featured at numerous high-profile festival concerts such as Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Glastonbury in England, Good Vibrations in Australia, and Back to Black in Brazil. At the top of 2011, Aloe Blacc signed with Simon Fuller’s management company XIX Entertainment and after a year, signed a recording deal with Interscope Records.
This year, he attended the UK’s Brit Awards for nominations in the categories of Best International Male and Best International Breakthrough Artist. Aloe Blacc is currently working on his third solo album, with performances scheduled in various countries throughout the year.
