Matthew Dear : Headcage EP :: Review
Headcage is Matthew Dear’s semi-follow-up to Black City containing 15 minutes of polyrhythmic electronic bliss. Recorded in Brooklyn’s Rare Book Room Studio, Headcage features production by Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid on the title track that is reminiscent of a minimal Peter Gabriel track involving monkeys and whatnot. Headcage also features guest vocals by Jonny Pierce of The Drums on the uber-poppy “In The Middle (I Met You There)” which disintegrates after impact leaving room for the subtle and draining “Street Song” Dear closes out Headcage with a dense and fuzzed out tribal setting on “Around a Fountain” which will ultimately rattle around your brain until his next full-length.
