Some Girls Live in Texas ‘78 262x300 The Rolling Stones : Some Girls Live in Texas 78 [Blu Ray] :: Review

In the sweltering summer month of July 1978 when it seemed like disco, punk and reggae would conquer the respective tastes of remaining rock fans, The Rolling Stones swooped down upon an unsuspecting Fort Worth audience momentarily billed as The London Green Shoed Cowboys and took the crowd by storm and thereby regained the holy chalice of rock and roll from its would be usurpers. That’s the picture that’s depicted within the cinematic context of Some Girls Live In Texas ‘78 and as a life-long fan of the Stones, I would like to think its an accurate depiction. Some Girls Live In Texas ’78 presents The Rolling Stones playing without abandon at the height of resurgence as they promoted the release of the Some Girls album in one of their best-filmed concerts courtesy of director Lynn Lenau Calmes who shot the footage in 16MM. The reason that I mentioned how the film was shot is because there are several fans that have been persistently whining about the visual clarity of the blu-ray – which basically amounts to nitpicking about the film’s grainy quality.

The Stones – Jagger, Watts, Richards, Wyman and Wood were deftly supported on the Some Girls tour with assistance from Ian Stewart on piano, Ian McLagan of The Faces on keyboards and Doug Kershaw on violin who immediately make you forget that any musical genre outside rock and roll does not matter. From the moment that Chuck Berry’s “Let It Rock” kicks off the proceedings, you’ll be enrapt with the Stones flawless performance until it closes with the familiar “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The bonus material features a wild-eyed Saturday Night Live performance, assorted interviews both past and present and a slightly unfunny Dan Aykroyd skit. The only negative thing that I can think of that detracts somewhat from this stellar blu-ray are the concert cameraman’s wandering fixation on Mick Jagger’s bouncing crotch and his ill-fitting leather pants.
