Peter Gabriel : New Blood – Live In London :: Review

petergabrielliveinlondon Peter Gabriel : New Blood Live In London :: ReviewPeter Gabriel has always been a forward thinking artist who is concerned with the intersection of technology and music.  Gabriel’s latest concert video New Blood – Live In London was shot in high definition 3D for a Blu-ray experience that takes advantage of both technologies. New Blood – Live In London was filmed at Hammersmith, Apollo in March of this year and captures Peter Gabriel performing live with his 46 piece New Blood Orchestra.  While I’m loathe to actually recommend that a rock artist perform with orchestras, it happens occasionally and typically results in a boring listen which is the case for Gabriel’s New Blood – Live In London set.

New Blood – Live In London features an assortment of material from Gabriel’s career with the majority taken from his recent Scratch My Back covers album presented in a dullish chamber pop performance.  The 3D visuals are meant to exemplify the drama in the new orchestral arrangements but come off more as a cheap gimmick and / or distraction.  The audio clarity on New Blood – Live In London is stunning considering its format but that’s all it has going for it that is unless you enjoy joyless performances.  As for me, I’ll stick to memories of WOMAD.
