U2′s New Songs : North Star and Glastonbury

U2 debuted two new songs titled “North Star” and “Glastonbury” while on tour in Turin, Italy August 6th.  Of the newer songs, “North Star” was deemed to be a love song for the universe and Bono was apparently feeling the love because he had the audience use their cell phones to “turn this place into the Milky Way.” “North Star” was declared unfinished and felt somewhat slight because the lyrics probably needed to be developed further as Bono hints at towards the end.

I chuckled when Bono made reference to “these punk rockers are getting a little hippy” before he introduced the follow up; the festival skipping ode,  “Glastonbury.”  I was unsure as to whom he was referring to as “punk rockers.”  Surely, Bono couldn’t have assumed that there was anyone in the audience who would think U2 was punk rock.  “Glastonbury” although finished sounded like a leftover from “No Line On The Horizon.”  The Edge’s guitar riffs sounded stale and rudimentary but that should be obvious to anyone who has ever watched “It Might Get Loud.”  Oh yeah, one last thing…Bono’s hopping around was a bit ridiculous for a 50 year old man.  It might have been cool circa “Zoo Station” but it’s kind of embarrassing now.  Think of your recuperating back, man!
