Junip (Jose Gonzalez) News

Mute Records and City Slang Records have set the upcoming release of “ROPE & SUMMIT”, the much-anticipated new EP from Junip.  The EP goes on sale at all digital music providers on May 25th, and will be available for free at the band’s official site, www.junip.net.  In addition, 12” vinyl will be released exclusively to indie stores in June (participating stores: http://www.thinkindie.com)

The Gothenburg, Sweden-based rock trio – fronted by acclaimed singer/songwriter/guitarist José González – have also unveiled early details of their upcoming new album.  FIELDSJunip’s first-ever full-length release – will be released on September 14th via Mute Records in the US and Canada, City Slang Records in Europe, Shock Records in Australia, and Ultra-Vybe in Japan.

Junip have slated a brief series of US concert dates to herald the release of FIELDS.  The trek begins on June 8th at Boston’s Great Scott, with further shows set for Brooklyn, New York, Milwaukee, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.  The band will then spend the summer performing at an array of European festivals, before returning to North America and Europe in the fall for a more extensive live schedule.

Junip was formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in the late ’90s by José González (guitar, vocals), Elias Araya (drums) and Tobias Winterkorn (organ, moog).  Their first 7-inch came out in 2000, followed in 2006 by the self-released BLACK REFUGE EP.  Junip has periodically gathered together to record when schedules permitted – including 2009’s RCRDLBL-distributed single “Chickens/Azaleadalen” – but the upcoming album and tour schedule marks the first time the members will focus exclusively on the band.

Junip’s sound can be familiar to those who have listened to González’s critically acclaimed solo records, with organs, synths, and drums featured alongside his nylon-stringed guitar and distinctive voice.  The songs are often dynamic, melodic and shadowy, with a sonic approach that is simultaneously intimate and atmospheric.
