Never Shout Never : What Is Love :: Review
The album cover to Never Shout Never’s proper debut “What Is Love’ reminded me of Ministry’s “With Sympathy” and this had me interested. Having never heard of Never Shout Never, I wondered what sort of savant had compromised the dead roses motif from the legendary industrial icons. To my astonishment the music contained inside wasn’t that of guitars grinding and flesh being torn asunder by demons that would conquer Earth.
The music that comprised “What Is Love” was some insipid bull crap written by an 18-year-old lovelorn Myspace devotee named Christofer Drew. Apparently, Drew built a massive following on the site with his ultra sub par Dashboard Confessional musings. Not that I’m giving Dashboard Confessional too much credibility, but they seem almost half literate when compared to these immature puppy dog musings on love and religious devotion.
Again, maybe I’m not the right audience for this stuff as it sounds like Drew hasn’t even gone through puberty. Drew’s vocals are cringe inducingly awful as they sound like he’s taken too many punches in the crotch. Yeah, it’s that bad, not to mention the accompanying guitar playing is so rudimentarily basic that I think my dog could come up with better chord progressions. Thankfully the album is short, just like my attention span as the songs dribbled from the speakers. Apparently Drew felt he was slighting his audience because of the length and included two songs as a download to complete the record, sadly these are two songs that I will not have the opportunity to laugh at. On the brighter side, maybe this album is a lark just as Ministry’s was and Drew will transform into a darker soul capable of wringing out heavier material. I’m not holding my breath.
