Liars : Sisterworld :: Review
If “Sisterworld” were a real geographic location instead of one fabricated by Liars, I would never visit. The smell of decay and the ruin of failed relationships surround “Sisterworld,” a city inspired by modern-day Los Angeles. “Sisterworld” is a densely claustrophobic and take-no-prisoners listen. The album represents a joyless experience partially due to the relentless rhythms that Liars create to enliven this dour city.
At times, the dreariness and monotony of the album would wear on me by the time it reached “Scarecrows On A Killer Slant” and I would promise myself that I would attempt to listen to the album again at a later date. While the album might have been a catharsis for the band, listeners who are feint of heart or looking for poppy melodies might not find it easy to appreciate as the subject matter is oppressively dark and at times overwhelming. Often times, it seems that the band forgot to pack a tune on their way to the sprawling megalopolis known as “Sisterworld.” Although the band forgot the necessary tunes to supplement the album, they did nail the atmosphere succinctly. To quote the title of the last track, “Sisterworld” is “Too Much, Too Much.”
