Recording Artist Moby to Donate Proceeds from California Concert Dates to Domestic Violence Shelters Devastated by Budget Cuts
Sacramento, CA, September 30, 2009—Award-winning recording artist Moby has announced that he will donate the proceeds of his three California tour dates to help that state’s struggling domestic violence shelters. Since Governor Schwarzenegger eliminated all State funding for shelter services in a July line-item veto, six California shelters have been forced to close, and dozens of others have laid off staff and cut services.
Moby said that he wanted to make his donation in a way that would ensure that the funds had a statewide impact.
“I’ve decided to give all of the revenue from my upcoming California shows to the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence,” he said. “My hope is that by doing this I will enable domestic violence prevention workers to continue their work, and also encourage other people to step in and help raise funds for domestic violence prevention and care. Domestic violence is equal parts prison and torture for many women, and my sincere hope is that we can step up and help to protect women in California and end domestic violence.”
The money from the three shows, in San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco, will be donated directly to the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence (CPEDV). CPEDV will act as a pass-through agency and administer the distribution of funds to those shelters and communities most affected by the budget cut. CPEDV Executive Director Tara Shabazz hopes that Moby’s contribution will encourage other donors to support domestic violence agencies either locally, or through her statewide organization. Because October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, she said it’s an opportune time to receive the donation.
“We are overwhelmed by Moby’s generosity and the commitment he’s showing to domestic violence victims,” she said. “The struggle to keep our shelters open is ongoing, and we have the long-term goal of establishing an additional funding source that will be available to help shelters statewide. In the short term, we must ensure that the Legislature reinstates domestic violence funding as soon as they reconvene in October. Our state can’t afford to lose any more shelters.”
Moby is touring in support of his new album “Wait for Me,” out now on Mute. He plays The House Of Blues in San Diego October 12th, The Wiltern in Los Angeles October 14th and Warfield Theatre in San Francisco October 15th.
