Guitar Center Announces Drum-Off ’09

Logo_Transparent.1 Get ready drummers as Guitar Center’s Drum Off Search begins again!  I’m the furthest thing from the drummer although I can play a  few masterful versions of some Bowie songs on guitar.  The rules and regulations are listed below.

Guitar Center Announces Drum-Off ’09

World’s Largest Drum Competition Offers Grand Prize Worth Over $40,000, Including $25,000 Cash, Gear and Product Endorsements

July 31, 2009 – Westlake Village, CA – Guitar Center is pleased to announce the return of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off, the world’s largest drum competition. Starting August 1st, drummers can sign up for their chance to win over $40,000 in cash and prizes, joining over 5,000 drummers from across the country to compete for the title of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off Champion.

Now in its 21st year, Guitar Center’s Drum-Off has been a launching pad for numerous professional drummers, including Cora “CC” Dunham (Prince), Eric Moore II (Suicidal Tendencies), Tony Royster Jr. (Jay Z) and Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta). Last year’s Drum-Off Champion, 22-year-old Jerome Flood II, made his television debut when he was invited to perform on Last Call with Carson Daly following his dramatic win (see Flood’s winning performance here).

The longest-standing program in a growing talent competition series, Drum-Off is part of Guitar Center’s ongoing mission to provide emerging artists and musicians with career-altering opportunities and vehicles to achieve success. Last month Guitar Center also launched King of the Blues, a nationwide search for the next great undiscovered blues guitar player. In 2008 Guitar Center also debuted On-Stage, a search for America’s next great rock band, with close to 8,000 bands vying for an opening slot on Mötley Crüe’s 30+ city North American arena tour, along with a record deal with Eleven Seven Music and a management contract with Tenth Street Entertainment (Mötley’s management company).

Like all Guitar Center music programs, Drum-Off is designed to provide developing artists with support-based opportunities that vastly improve the potential for their success as professional musicians. Drum-Off inspires up-and-coming drummers to further their musical aspirations, while at the same time encouraging the local music community and providing a platform for local musicians to network and be discovered.

Guitar Center’s Drum-Off ‘09 champion will win an impressive package of prizes, including $25,000 cash, a Roland TD-25 electronic kit, a custom designed drum kit by DW, Pearl, Gretsch, Tama, or Orange Country Drums, a drum, stick, cymbal, and drum head endorsement deals as well as a feature in Modern Drummer magazine, along with a VIP appearance @ NAMM 2010 and a Monster Energy Drink endorsement deal, making the total prize package worth over $40,000. Additionally, Monster Energy, Pro-Mark, Latin Percussion, DW, Remo, Vic Firth, Orange County Drum and Percussion, Zildjian, Gretsch, Roland, Tama, Pearl, Evans and Modern Drummer are all proud sponsors of Guitar Center’s Drum-Off 09.

How Drum-Off Works:

Sign-ups for the preliminary rounds of the Drum-Off competition begin August 1, and run on a “first-come, first-serve” basis, with a maximum of 30 registrants per store. Contestants must sign up with a Guitar Center drum department associate at their local store — no phone or Internet sign-ups are available.

Local competitions start September 24 in all 214 Guitar Center locations from nationwide. One winner from each store will be chosen to move up to district competitions (24 locations), followed by regionally hosted semi-finals (6 locations) and culminating at Guitar Center’s Drum-Off grand finals in Los Angeles in January of 2010 (exact date and venue TBD).

COMPETITION DATES:

STORE PRELIMS: September 24, October 1, and October 8.

STORE FINALS: October 15

DISTRICT FINALS: November 5

REGIONAL FINALS: December 3

GRAND FINALS: January 2010

Following the regional finals on December 3, five finalists will head for Los Angeles in January, where they will perform in front of a capacity crowd and a panel of celebrity judges as well as sharing the stage with some of today’s most legendary drummers. Past  Guitar Center Drum-Off grand final performers include Travis Barker (Blink 182), ?uestlove (The Roots) Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Danny Carey (Tool), Angels and Airwaves,  Papa Roach, Tommy Lee (Mötley Crüe), Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden), Jason Bittner (Shadows Fall), Adrian Young (No Doubt),  Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction) The Street Drum Corps, Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta) and Thomas Lang.

The Willowz Ready to Release “Everyone” on October 6th

Willowz1.1Los Angeles’ The Willowz are back with their vibrant energy and vintage inspired new wave sound. The band’s new album, Everyone, is a strong statement of musical evolution. While staying true to their no-strings-attached soul infused garage rock sound, the band has incorporated stronger crafted pop hooks than ever before.

When The Willowz formed in 2002, they were just teenagers with ambitious dreams. Fast forward seven years and the band has found itself featured on the soundtracks to such award winning films such as “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind” and “The Science Of Sleep,” and on numerous publications’ “best of the year” lists. Nominated for L.A. Weekly’s “Rock Band of the Year,” making Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of the Year, and coveting the O.C. Weekly’s “#1 Rock Album of the Year” for their 2007 record, Chautauqua, The Willowz are gearing up for the release of their eagerly anticipated forth album, Everyone.

Opening the record is “Break Your Back,” a track that starts out with simple percussion and colorful vocals before crescendo-ing into a massive, heavily layered song, paving the way for the remainder of this dynamic rock album. “I Know” rides the waves between garage rock vigor and an undeniably addictive, anthemic chorus. “Way It Seems” highlights lead vocalist Richie James Follin’s incredible range as his falsetto accompanies the always tempo changing song, making it stand out as an original track that can’t be qualified as either fast paced nor a ballad, but rather manages to be both.

The Willowz once again challenge the rock genre with their unique and beautifully crafted sound. Their luscious harmonies and fiercely rocking melodies make Everyone a gem in their already expansive discography.

NSAI SONG CONTEST PRESENTED BY CMT

July 30, 2009 by greg

downloadNashville, Tennessee (July 30, 2009) – The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) announces the 10th Anniversary of the NSAI Song Contest Presented by CMT. Kicking off August 1 and running through October 31, 2009, the contest boasts unparalleled career-building industry relationships designed to help unsigned songwriters navigate the road to becoming professional hitmakers. The Grand Prize Winner will receive an exclusive mentoring session with The Valory Music Co. recording artist Jewel.

“By offering meetings with major publishers, we don’t just get aspiring songwriters’ feet in the door; we rip the door off its hinges and create an opportunity for them to build relationships with top-notch songwriters, publishers and music industry executives that would normally take years to establish. As we celebrate our 10th Anniversary, we hope to continue that trend and build upon NSAI’s legacy of educating, promoting and protecting songwriters in all genres,” says NSAI Executive Director Bart Herbison.

Entering its 10th year, NSAI has created – along with CMT for the past four years – a nationwide platform for aspiring songwriters to submit their best tunes with one Grand Prize Winner and one CMT Listeners’ Choice Winner. Past winners understand this is a powerful vehicle to get “discovered” and have found success from signing an artist development deal with DreamWorks Records to securing a music-publishing staff writer deal.

Nashville pro writers, publishers and industry professionals will narrow down the finalists over three rounds of judging and select the Grand Prize Winner, 10 Runners-Up and 10 Honorable Mentions before the Top 10 (excluding the Grand Prize Winner) are posted on www.nsai.cmt.com. Fans can vote online for their favorite song from January 20 through February 26, 2010. Last year there were more than 94,000 votes for the CMT Listeners’ Choice.

In addition to the mentoring session with Jewel, prizes include a single-song professional demo, tickets to the 2011 CMT Music Awards, a private tour of CMT studios, a performance at the legendary Bluebird Café, meetings with major music publishers and a one-year membership to NSAI, just to name a few. Take advantage of this opportunity to launch a songwriting career. For a full list of prizes and how to enter, visit www.nsai.cmt.com.

All genres of music are encouraged. The entry fees are $35.00 (NSAI members) and $45.00 (non-members) per song submitted. Proceeds benefit the NSAI Legislative Fund to protect the rights of songwriters.

Lou Reed Helps Kevin Hearn Wake World Up From “Coma”

Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle’s new album, “Havana Winter” is out this week and Kevin Hearn and Thin Buckle are touring to promote it too.  What I can’t get over is Kevin Hearn’s fancy spaceship shirt that he’s wearing as he’s rocking out on the guitar! I’ve seen a lot of concerts and the performer’s wardrobe has never been that exciting until now, thanks Kevin Hearn! That shirt kicks a lot of ass equally as much as the three howling wolves tee and my guess is that Kevin had that shirt in the laundry. You know you’re in for a tour-de-force of a performance if Kevin Hearn wears that shirt while on stage.  I can only imagine how much shredding Hearn can do while wearing the spaceships!

Oh yeah, back to the song -  “Coma” is a little electro influenced track about over-fishing that Lou Reed adds to with a jagged guitar solo and backup vocal.
Check it out below!
