Best of 2008 : Top Ten Reissues
10. Alice Cooper : Easy Action
On Easy Action, Alice Cooper is still trying to determine his sound. On this release, he’s all over the place and the results present many different sides of him ranging from a Frank Zappa copyist to Beatlesque rock.
9. Little Willie John : Nineteen Sixty Six
The fabled Nineteen Sixty Six recordings by Little Willie John as produced by David Axelrod. Recorded prior to his stint in prison, these recordings speak volumes about the man at the apex of his skills.
8. Rodriguez : Cold Fact
Sixto Rodriguez has been called the Hispanic Bob Dylan for his songwriting abilities. Previously ignored in the US, now is the time to give him his due. Standout tracks include “Sugar Man” and “Hate Street Dialog.”
7. Otis Redding : Otis Blue – Otis Redding Sings Soul
Simply awesome and essential.
6. David Bowie : Live Santa Monica ’72
This set captures Bowie at the moment he completely transformed into Ziggy Stardust. Sloppy performances and flubbed lyrics add to its charms.
5. Belle & Sebastian : BBC Sessions
Exquisite indie folk from this UK group recorded live for the BBC. The organ on “Seymour Stein” is classic.
4. Fairport Convention : Unhalfbricking
This is one of those records that I could listen to time and time again. It was a tossup between this and What We Did On Our Vacations.
3. Pavement : Brighten The Corners Nicene Creedence Ed.
Pavement has always been a favorite of mine with their guitar squall and poppy melodies. Matador out did itself with the wealth of B-Sides and unreleased material contained on this set. Standouts include “The Killing Moon” “Starlings of the Slipstream.”
2. Brothers Unlimited : Who’s For The Young
Brothers Unlimited comprised 14 Memphis Stax studio musicians who recorded this gem in 1970. They created a brilliant mix of Southern soul mixed with psychedelia and then faded into obscurity.
1. Bob Dylan : Tell Tale Signs
A treasure trove of Dylan’s castoffs from his late 80′s until the present. It’s important to note that many of Dylan’s throwaway songs could still be considered a greatest hits package. This set presents a sampling of Dylan’s many moods and bands and leaves me wanting more.
Bubbling Under :
Beck – Odelay, CCR -Various, Dennis Wilson – Pacific Ocean Blue, Fairport Convention – What We Did On Our Vacation, Jay Reatard – Singles 06-07, Johnny Cash – Complete Folsom Prison, Khan- Space Shanty, Lucifer’s Friend, Mogwai – Young Team, Mudhoney- Superfuzz Bigmuff, U2, The Clash – Live At Shea Stadium, Neil Young – Sugar Mountain
