Love Story

lovestory1 212x300 Love Story

I have just finished watching Love Story, a documentary about the LA band Love and its singer, Arthur Lee.  The film is interesting as Arthur Lee takes you on a trip through the places that Love had played. The film details the band’s rise and eventual disintegration as rock and roll casualties.  It is interesting to note that band in fighting and lack of touring disrupted the rise of one of California’s best psychedelic bands.

In the film, Arthur Lee largely ignores the Bryan Maclean’s input in the band.  Arthur Lee is somewhat eccentric in the film, and Johnny Echols the straight man revealing their thoughts on the music scene in the 1960’s.  This film is indispensable as it contains the last interviews with Arthur Lee who succumbed to leukemia in 2006.

Could Love have surpassed their protégés, The Doors?  That’s hard to say, although Johnny Echols blames racism as a reason that the multi-racial band never caught on. That last statement seems easy, as it doesn’t explain the success of Sly and The Family Stone.
