Matthew Sweet : Sunshine Lies Sampler
Matthew Sweet releases his tenth record, “Sunshine Lies” on August 26, which is a supposed return to form. Judging by his three song sampler on his website which includes “Byrd Girl”, “Let’s Love” and “Sunshine Lies”, I would say that its an adequate description. These 3 songs could easily be alternate tracks on his Girlfriend or what became the Good Friend bootleg.
Out of the three songs, “Byrd Girl” reminds me more of Girlfriend material. “Let’s Love,” sounds similar to “Dinosaur Act” from Altered Beast. “Sunshine Lies” is a little looser, almost John Lennonish in its delivery. I’m not too crazy about the Susannah Hoff’s backup vocal on this track as it sounds too kitschy, and makes the song too glossy. Overall, I’d give these tracks 3 or 3 ½ stars. Welcome back, Mr. Sweet.
