1981 Movies Redux

The movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has rekindled an interest of the Indiana Jones mythos and similar action films from the same era, that being the year 1981. When researching this article, I checked various sources categorized by Google and they posted very similar popular movies from 1981. The list included, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Escape from New York, Time Bandits, Reds, Body Heat, Blow Out, The Howling, Mad Max 2, and the list goes on. When I searched for popular movies on Yahoo, I found myself with a completely different list. Sure, the movies included in that list included the old regulars, but the popular movies list blew my mind with its greatness. Below are some of the films that made Yahoo’s Popular Movies of 1981 list. Sadly, I could only find a few trailers for the films that were included on this brilliant list. Hopefully, I can track down some of the other gems.

The Beyond

Summary: An Italian directed film, (Fulci) set in New Orleans involving a house centered on a Hell hot spot. Fans of “Suspiria” should take note!

Graduation Day

Summary: After a teen dies during a high school track meet, her friends start to die in mysterious ways! Stars a young Vanna White.

Heartbeeps

Summary: Stars Andy Kauffman and Bernadette Peters as two robots on the run and in love. Oddly enough, this film bombed so badly at the box office that Andy Kauffman films were in limbo for the future.

Just Before Dawn

Summary: Similar to Wrong Turn, a slasher is loose, and it’s anybody’s guess who will survive. Stars George Kennedy.

New Year’s Evil

Summary: A brilliant slasher film set during New Year’s Eve.

Out of the Yahoo list, these were the only decent trailers that I could find. There was a film called, “On the Right Track,” starring Gary Coleman as a lovable scamp who picks winning horses after stowing away at a racetrack. If this measured up to his finest performance in a very special “Diff’rent Strokes” we’d have a winner.

*Update*

*If you search Yahoo Movies 1981-1984, you will find that a lot of the films listed there are cult classics interspersed with 4 or 5 non cult films.
